The compulsory school attendance requirement can be fulfilled not only at public schools, but also at independent schools. Independent schools admit pupils in accordance with the regulations that apply to state schools, but may set additional admission requirements.
- When registering at an independent school, the same data is collected as when registering at a public school:
- Family name,
- First name,
- Date of birth,
- place of birth,
- gender,
- address,
- telecommunications connections,
- religious affiliation,
- nationality,
- Date of arrival of children not born in Germany,
- Predominant family language,
- Impairments and illnesses (insofar as they are relevant to school attendance),
- Number of siblings,
- Date of first school enrollment,
- information on attendance at a kindergarten as well as the names, addresses and telecommunications connections of the parents.
The following documents are required:
- Letter of enrollment
- Birth certificate of your child
- Proof of childcare needs, if applicable
- Custody order, if applicable
- Enrollment form, if applicable
Admission to independent schools is subject to the same conditions as public schools:
- school age
- if applicable, registration of children not yet of compulsory school age
- successful attendance of elementary school as a prerequisite for admission to lower secondary schools
- if applicable, special admission requirements for particular types of school or school types.
Independent schools can also set their own admission requirements, for example
- Religious affiliations for denominational schools
- suitability for special educational concepts
- special performance requirements.
Enrollment is generally free of charge.
Private schools may charge tuition fees for school attendance, which must be paid by the parents/guardians. Please contact the respective private schools directly for more information.
- Admission to an independent school is based on an application procedure that generally takes place during the same periods as at state schools.
- Any deviations in dates will be announced by the independent schools.
- In the event of a refusal of admission to an independent school, it is always possible to register at a state school.
The decision on admission to an independent school is usually made within a few days, so that in the event of a rejection, it is still possible to register at a public school within the deadline.
The registration deadlines for public schools apply; if necessary, different deadlines for independent schools will be announced by them.
Admission to an independent school is based on the conclusion of a school contract under private law, which establishes a school relationship under private law. Appeals under civil law are possible.
