Does your child have a disability? Would you like your school-age child to receive special educational support? If special educational needs have been identified, attendance at a special school or participation in inclusive education is an option.

Pupils with special educational needs attend special schools in Rhineland-Palatinate or take part in inclusive lessons. The decision is made by the parents after consultation with the schools. There is a nationwide network of focus schools and special schools.

Focus schools are primary and secondary schools that offer inclusive education close to home. They

• offer both the school leaving certificate of the respective type of school and the special school leaving certificates of the special schools;
• can be attended by pupils with all funding priorities.

Special schools

• offer the funding priorities
  -- learning, holistic development, language, social-emotional development, motor development,
  -- Vision (school for the blind and visually impaired)
  -- Hearing (School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing)

include, depending on the funding priority,

-- the entrance level of primary education,

-- primary and lower secondary education,

-- primary, secondary and vocational school (Werkstufe).

The School Authority

• decides whether there are special educational needs.
• determines the focus school or special school to be attended according to the decision of the parents.

The school attended or, in the case of school beginners, the primary school to be attended initiates the procedure for determining special educational needs.
